29/11/14 Oudtshoorn

The next morning we set off for Oudtshoorn (pronounced Oatshorn) a drive of about 4 hours we went through many pretty villages, Robertson, Worcester, Barryvale, Ladysmith and Calizdorp to name a few.  We even went past Ronnies Sex Shop – this is not a sex shop at all but a café on route!!

We didn’t see much wildlife on the way except for baboons and ostriches.  Oudtshoorn is the Ostrich capital of the world and you see many Ostrich farms the closer you get to the town.

At Oudtshoorn we were booked into the Old Mill which was really nice.  Good food, stunning views and great hosts.

At Oudtshoorn we visited the Cango Caves.  These magnificent caves have been open to the public since the early 1800’s and we went on a very interesting cave tour.

We also while in Oudtshoorn we visited an ostrich show farm.  This was interesting however, our guide was totally bored by the whole subject!!!  She obviously used the same patter with each group and it was a bit naff.  We decided that we didn’t really like ostriches, they looked very gormless and were not bright at all.  Part of the tour included a bit of ostrich riding which we both declined.

After such an exciting morning we spent the afternoon sunning ourselves round the pool.  The sky was clear and blue just perfect.  Another evening was spent having a meal in the country house restaurant – lovely.
